Public works employees are vitally important in our communities, and in great demand across
West Michigan. Municipalities are looking for people who are passionate about improving the
lives of those around them.
The need is great, so communities have partnered with Grand Rapids Community College to
develop a hands-on, active learning experience that prepares people for great careers and
opportunities in public works.
Successful graduates of the Public Works Academy will receive interviews with two of the
community partners for possible seasonal or internship positions at public works facilities in
West Michigan. This is the first step to secure a full-time position.
Job titles include:
• Building specialist
• Engineering technician
• Equipment operator
• Fleet services technician
• Maintenance worker for utilities,
streets, grounds and buildings
Two Training Sessions to choose from:
January 21-April 17, 2019 from 5:30 - 8:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays
or
January 22-March 12, 2019 from 9:00am - 3:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The program consists of 84 hours of training.
Program is $652 (if you live in the cities of Grand Rapids, Kentwood or Wyoming it's just $25) -
the remaining cost is off-set by grant funding. This is open to individuals over 18 years old who
are ready to work. High school diploma or GED is recommended. A valid drivers license may be
